At Oregon Advanced Imaging, we want to ensure you receive the highest level of imaging service. Listed below are helpful tips to prepare for your appointment. Should you have any questions before your appointment, our scheduling department is available to assist you.
A word about insurance:
- We understand that today’s health insurance policies are confusing at best, that’s why we work with your referring doctor and insurance company to complete any preauthorizations that may be required. Since this paperwork
needs to be processed before your appointment can be scheduled, it is important that your referring office has your most current insurance information. It is also advisable for you to contact your insurance provider directly to inquire about any special coverage requirements.
Depending on your insurance coverage you may be asked to pay your co-pay portion at the time of your exam.
Patient Prep:
- You may eat, drink, and take medications as usual, UNLESS you are advised differently.
- Since metal is not allowed in the MRI scanning area it is best to leave any jewelry, including piercings at home. You will be provided with a secure locker to store any hearing aids, glasses, watches, etc. that you may need to wear to your appointment. To ensure you are not wearing any metal into the MRI you will
be provided with a comfortable gown.
- When scheduling your appointment you will be asked if you have any metal in your body, this includes pace makers, shunts, shrapnel. It is important that you let our scheduling department know of any metal that may be in your body.
- Please allow approximately an hour and a half for your MRI appointment. Actual scanning time will take between 30-60 minutes per exam. Multiple scans may take longer.
- For optimal imaging quality during the scan you will need to remain still. If you feel you may be in too much pain to remain still, please consult your referring physician, who may prescribe a pain medication for your study.
- Patients who are claustrophobic should inform the scheduler at the time their exam is scheduled. OAI offers three different types of scanners to fit your needs. Our schedulers work with you and your physician to determine the best scanner choice for your health issue and comfort level.
- If arrangements have been made for sedation, please plan to have someone drive you home.
- In some instances an IV tube will be placed in your arm to administer Gadolinium, which is a contrast agent that helps create better images in specific MRIs and MRAs. If contrast is used, OAI may request a blood test to confirm your kidneys are functioning sufficiently. For more information about the use of contrast please click here.
- During your exam you will hear loud thumping sounds, but will feel no physical sensations. This sound is common to all MRIs. Ear plugs and music headphones are available, or bring a favorite CD if you have a music preference.
- After your exam a radiologist trained in interpreting MRI scans will review your images, and prepare a report that will be forwarded to your referring provider. This takes approximately 3 - 5 working days. Your doctor will contact you with your results.
